🚨 NCAA Rule Updates You Need to Know

1. Proposed “5-for-5” Eligibility Rule

The NCAA is discussing a major eligibility overhaul that would give athletes 5 full years to compete starting at age 19 or high school graduation.

That would likely eliminate:

  • Redshirt seasons

  • Medical redshirts

  • Extra waiver years (in most cases)

Why It Matters:

This would simplify eligibility but could drastically change recruiting, roster building, and player development timelines. Programs may prioritize long-term fits over short-term portal rentals.

2. New Transfer Portal Enforcement

The NCAA passed immediate penalties for schools that recruit or add transfers before they officially enter the portal.

Possible penalties include:

  • Head coach suspension (50% of season)

  • Large fines to the program

Why It Matters:

Schools now need to be more careful with portal communication. Compliance is becoming a bigger deal again.

3. Basketball Portal Window Already Changed

Basketball’s transfer portal now opens after the national championship and lasts only 15 days instead of 30.

Why It Matters:

Everything moves faster now. Decisions, visits, NIL offers, and commitments will happen in a shorter window.
